Both my parents had dementia; Mum vascular, Dad Alzheimer's.

It's a horrific disease and there is precious little in the way of help. If the person with dementia has savings they will be taken to pay for their care. My parents were systematically asset stripped because their illness had the wrong name. If my dad had been suffering from a front temporal lobe brain tumour he would have presented all the same symptoms but received his health care for free.

I write this simply to highlight the unfairness the system, which makes something that is already difficult feel insurmountable. I am sure the years of stress Mum faced looking after Dad contributed to her vascular dementia, too.

Dementia care is demanding and difficult, it often breaks the carer well before the person suffering. Finding money to pay for care is a constant worry and there is little or no official support for anyone with savings.

Even when the threshold is reached, sufferers and their families have to jump through endless hoops and form filling. They are often left to figure everything out on their own and no two local authorities handle dementia care the same way.

At a time of massive stress to families and people who have been diagnosed the system piles on more.

Do we need a cure?
