Mary Thompson is raising money for Leukaemia UK
In memory of Ian Sadler

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·

Our mission is to bring together the leukaemia community so we can find and fund the life-changing research that matters most. Together we can stop leukaemia devastating lives through research, awareness and advocacy.

Story

In autumn 2019, Ian Sadler, my brother-in-law ('Mad Bil,' as I called him), was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. From that time and up until his death, Ian was in and out of hospital, where he received numerous blood transfusions that gave him little more than a temporary boost.

Ian had a genuine zest for life and he still had so much more to live for so it was desperately sad that he died while still in his prime. He was ill throughout the pandemic, which made it difficult for his wife, Rachel (my sister) and his 16 year old daughter, Imogen to even visit. Ian died on 22 December 2020, just before we entered a lengthy lockdown, which meant that his funeral could only be attended by a few people.

I am running the London Marathon 2025 to raise money for Leukaemia UK so that more money can be invested into finding a cure for this awful disease, and I will be thinking of Ian when I run. I have pledged to raise £2300 and would be grateful for any donations. Rachel, Imogen and I greatly appreciate your support.
