In memory of Michael Haworth

NASS is only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people with axial spondyloarthritis (AS), a painful, progressive rheumatic disease which mainly affects the spine. An estimated 200,000 people live with AS in the UK. Our 90+ branches across the UK offer regular exercise to anyone with AS.

Story

On Saturday 8 September I will be taking part in a walk to raise money in memory of a very special person, my uncle, Michael Haworth, who sadly passed away in November.

For over 20 years, Michael suffered from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a painful, debilitating disease that affects the joints and can cause eventual fusion of the spine. Michael passed away due to heart disease, arising from diabetes, the symptoms of which we believe were long hidden by his AS.

All money raised from this walk will be going to the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS), the charity for whom Michael volunteered and who also helped him so much in return.

As of 2012, no cure is known for AS.

Our challenge

A small group of us, myself, friends and family will be attempting to walk the six peak challenge known as the Buttermere Horseshoe to honour Michaels' memory by raising money for NASS. This 23 kilometre walk, which takes approximately 10 hours to complete will be a test of everyone’s stamina, ascending the likes of Red Pike, Haystacks and Dale Head.

During the walk we will be rewarded with great views of the Lake District, one of Michael’s favourite places as well as being able to raise money in aid of such a worthy cause.

Any donations you can give in memory of Michael to help this fantastic charity would be greatly appreciated.
