Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Sunday April 23rd I will be running the London marathon for Prostate Cancer UK thanks to New Balance.  In 2021 my good friend Lee Atherton, aged 49 at the time, was told the devastating news he had Advanced Prostate Cancer Stage 4 (incurable). Around October 2021 Lee noticed he began urinating more frequently, particularly in the night and in November (with a push from his wife) he called the doctors and arranged a urine sample and blood test. The blood test came back with PSA level 156 (anything above 3 is referred).

By December following an Internal examination, biopsy and CT scan it was confirmed Lee had Advanced stage 4 prostate cancer and that it had spread to his stomach and lymph nodes.

Lee was also told it was very likely that his cancer had been in his body for up to a year and until Oct 21, he had no signs or pains whatsoever & had been fit & well.
The only way he could’ve possibly known, was if he’d been having regular yearly blood tests.

18 months on Lee is fighting incredibly hard and with treatment he now has his PSA down to under 0.1. Lee's bravery and attitude in fighting this disease is truly inspirational and if I can draw on a fraction of that when I am running those last miles I know I can get to the finish line.

Please kindly donate to Prostate UK who continually research and land new treatments for Prostate Cancer. With the extra funding they can work towards supporting those that need their help now, and look to make this disease far less impacting in the future.

The key is to catch things as early as possible, as they have treatments to stop the cancer growing if any issue is spotted, so for any friends reading this, please also make sure you have an annual blood test to check.
