Story
In memory of Tony Traedwell and to raise funds for Sarcoma Research at the Nuffield Orthopaedic centre in Oxford. I will be embarking on a seven day cross country ski trek across the Hardanger Vidda Plato in Norway.
This trek follows the same route taken by four Norwegian saboteurs in 1942 known as The Tellemark Hero’s.
This world war two operation, code named “Grouse” was to destroy the Nazi heavy water plant at the Vemork Rjukan Hydro Electric Power Plant. The substance called Deuterium Oxide or heavy water was to be used by the Nazi’s in the development of an Atomic bomb.
Although dramatized in to a Hollywood film the true story of these men and how they survived on one of the most inhospitable environments in Europe was never truly told.
Following four days artic survival and ski training at the Joint Services Training Centre in Evjemoen we will set out on a three day trek across the Hardanger Vidda Plato.
During this three day trek we will get to experience temperatures of
minus 25, sleep in snow shelters as well as the actual cabins used by the saboteurs. Finally we will carry out a re-enactment of the attack on the Hydro Electric plant.
So Why!
Tony had a love of life and a wonderful can do attitude that I admired so much. He touched many people’s lives and I would be hugely grateful if you could support me in helping the Nuffield Orthopaedic centre to help people like Tony who have Sarcoma.
Thank you
Matt
