Students at Plymouth take on the Three Peaks Challenge for Unseen!

Story

Slavery. It isn't a distant nightmare it's happening right
now in every town, city and rural area of the UK. Unseen is working towards a world without slavery. We support survivors to rebuild their lives and tackle the root causes of modern slavery, by informing those who may come into contact with victims in their everyday work to spot the signs and influence the government to develop a strategic approach to support all victims and end modern slavery.

In 2016, at any one time, it was estimated that 40.3 million
people across the globe were in modern slavery (5.4 victims for every 1,000 people on the planet.) in areas such as domestic servitude, forced labour and sexual exploitation. A shocking ¼ of victims of modern slavery in its myriad forms are children. Many victims of modern slavery are tricked and coerced into leaving their home country to move to a foreign land with the promise of stable
employment and a better life only to be enslaved in a country in which they might not speak the language and/or may not have anyone to reach out to for help. The National Crime Agency identified that potential victims of human trafficking in 2018 were from 130 different nationalities. The sheer number of potential victims of human Trafficking in 2018 (6,993) represents a 36% increase
from the prior year.

Though these statistics may make the issue seem forlorn,
Unseen conduct vital work to make the awareness of the issue of modern slavery more widespread and aid the victims of modern slavery in their return to normality. It is needless to say that the victims have endured such hardship that a return to normal life is difficult, but Unseen make it possible. Unseen run 2 safehouses, one for women, one for men. In these safehouses, the occupants have access to medical care, counselling, legal advice and assistance, holistic therapy sessions, education, financial assistance, immigration
advice and assistance to return home or reside in the UK. Unseen also helps child victims of modern slavery, with volunteer house parents looking after the children and Unseen offering specialist care and assistance as well as teaching skills such as English. Unseen can only continue to do this invaluable work with the support of you and your generous donations.
