Saving babies from their first breath - advancing neonatal intensive care in Vietnam to help close the gap between developing and developed world standards of newborn care. Our work addresses the critical shortage of nurses, trained health workers and basic specialist lifesaving equipment.

Story

I've signed up to ride and raise money for Newborns Vietnam. It involves  600km with 12,000m of climbing in just 4 days in the remote northwest of Vietnam.

Newborns Vietnam work with local hospitals and universities to reduce neonatal mortality and long-term disability as a result of poor care.

Having had newborn twins spend time in an NICU, I understand the need for world class facilities.

Newborns Vietnam works in partnership with Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children and the Vietnam National Children's Hospital in Hanoi. They work across South-East Asia but with a focus on Vietnam. In the Hospitals they have partnered with they had successfully halved the neonatal mortality rates from 30% to 15% (roughly in line with the survival rates in the developed world).

For the cycling geeks out there the route is as follows (21-24MAR18):

  • Day 1: Lao Cai to Lai Chau – Distance 99km – Climb 3,286m
  • Day 2: Lai Chau to Dien Bien Phu – Distance 180km – Climb 3,204m
  • Day 3: Dien Bien Phu to Son La – Distance 143km – Climb 2,674m
  • Day 4: Son La to Mai Chau – Distance 177km – Climb 2,630m

I know we all get a number of these requests, but if you can donate a few quid, every little bit helps.

I will be paying for my flights and accommodation, so your donation will be going straight to Newborns Vietnam (less JustGiving's 5% fee).
