A bracing sea adventure · 6 July 2020

We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

July 2020 - This time last year Giles and I felt that we needed to plan a new trip and that we should do something different.  Accordingly, on the basis that we know nothing about boats and have never rowed in our lives, we decided to row from Lee in North Devon to Ballycotton in Cork, Ireland - a distance of some 200 miles across the Celtic sea fuelled with Guinness and good white Burgundy.  Unfortunatly, we have had to tweak our plan (pandemic related) and we will now be rowing from Lee to Scotland (well the nearest point in England to Scotland in keeping with current guidelines), a distance of some 250 miles up the Irish Sea.  We are planning on setting sail in early July (weather permitting) in the Pegasus, an Atlantic rowing boat, supported by the very patient Charlie from Rannoch Adventure. This will be 5ish days rowing, 24hrs a day, 2 hours on 2 off!  As always, the only sensible bit is that we intend to raise money for some excellent causes.

I will be supporting Great Ormond Street. In particular, the hospital is in urgent need of two more Giraffe Incubators (which cost £30,000 each).  They are used instead of beds for tiny newborns on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This can be due to their size (less than 1.6 kilos) and their prematurity that requires continuous rigorous temperature and humidity regulation. These incubators provide vital shielding.  This is always important but clearly all the more so during the Covid-19 crisis. All the money we raise will go towards these incubators.
