Story

We are fundraising to support Chickenshed - a charity that uses the performing arts as a vehicle to champion difference and demonstrate the strengths of a more inclusive world. As a family we have been privileged to have been part of Chickenshed's journey since around the year 2001.

Laura - "I have been part of Chickenshed since I was 5 years old, and having gone all the way through Childrens' and Youth Theatre groups, I am now a student there. I have graduated with a BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts taught at Chickenshed and now, I am studying there for a Foundation Degree in Inclusive Performance. I didn't have a great time in school because teachers didn't understand my disability or how to support me. Chickenshed has boosted my confidence in everything in life, really. They made me feel that I didn't have to be afraid to make mistakes or be ashamed of my disability. I have learnt about about Inclusive Practice and that is why I am studying this, so that I can pass the message on to people and organisations who aren't inclusive enough, and for them to realise that just because they have diversity it doesn't mean that they know how to be inclusive. I have met people at Chickenshed that I would never have met elsewhere and made some wonderful friends. Chickenshed has always been there for me when other people weren't."

Tom - "Chickenshed is a place you can be who you want to be, without fear of judgement. There are no auditions – everyone is welcome and is treated as a vital part of the organisation. I joined the Childrens’ Theatre when I was just 5 years old and immediately noticed how it is a melting pot of every part of society. However, after making my way through Childrens’ and Youth Theatre, I can see now how it isn’t simply an inclusive college, theatre company or after-school club. Instead, Chickenshed uses the medium of performance to give young people the skills and confidence they need to make a difference. The company’s unique outlook gives so many individuals the opportunity to provide their input and to discover themselves as not only a performer but as a member of society. I always felt welcome and included, and even had the opportunity to perform as part of the band in my final Christmas show as a member. Chickenshed spots what individuals have to offer and ensures that you leave with the knowledge that just a little bit of kindness and encouragement can change the world."

Matthew and Francesca - The magic of Chickenshed came into our lives at a challenging and dark time for our family. It helped to heal and enthuse us with its positivity. We are both privileged to have been able to serve as volunteers for the organisation as well as to watch Tom and Laura grow and flourish as part of their journey through the unique experience that is Chickenshed.
