Matt's Wigan-10K Run · 8 September 2013

Joining Jack has the ultimate aim of finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, one of the most common fatal genetic conditions in the world. Recent scientific breakthroughs mean that the development of a treatment is closer than ever, and this will not only help Jack but all sufferers of DMD.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 8th September i will be running the 'Inaugural Wigan 10K Run', raising money for Joining Jack.

I have never done anything of this nature before, in fact my furthest run in recent years has been for a train / bus ;) so i'm dreading it, yet i'm determined to get through it so that we can raise lots of money for Joining Jack

Jack is a young boy who suffers from Duchene Muscular Dystrophy DMD. He does not know it yet but he has a terminal incurable disease. At the moment there is no cure for DMD. Jack's life will follow a predetermined path, mapped out by the this progressive muscle wasting condition. He will not be able to walk when he reaches adolescence and will lose the use of every single muscle in his body thereafter. He may need spinal rods to keep him upright and ventilation to help him breathe. Eventually his heart and lungs will fail and he will die.

DMD is one of the most common fatal genetic disorders to affect children around the world. Approximately one in every 3,500 boys worldwide is afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with 20,000 new cases reported each year in the developed world.

The Joining Jack charity was set up by Jacks parents as there was very little awareness of DMD and research into finding possible treatments is drastically underfunded. Since the charity was set up human clinical trials have begun to take place with encouraging results. All the money raised for the charity will help move things forward for Jack and many other children like him.

Raising money will help fund research to find an effective set of treatments and hopefully one day find a cure.
