Story

I’m running the 2022 London Marathon (originally 2020) in aid of White Lodge,
a centre that supports the disabled community of Surrey and has been vital to my Mum’s recovery.  My aim is to complete it in under 3.5 hours.  Your support, cheering and donations would be gratefully appreciated, as I attempt to prevent one song whirring around my mind for 26.2miles. Please God, let it not be an Andrew Lloyd Webber number…

As many of you know, seven years ago my Mum suffered a
sudden horrific stroke as a result of an accident whilst abseiling on a school trip.  She became ‘locked in’, with only the ability to move her eyes, and endured the resulting months in an intensive care unit, a high dependency ward, and continuing rehabilitation.  The stroke affected her speech, her movement, her emotions and psychology, and drastically hindered her ability to function normally.  She’s come so far since – she’s getting stronger at walking, her speech is improving, and her continuing focus and determination to get better is inspirational.  Despite such a life-changing event, Mum’s tireless commitment to her recovery (sometimes, too much: it’s OK to rest every now and then Mum…) has also overflowed into her kindness for others, as she’s supported and encouraged others in their recovery and care.

An organisation that has been crucial to her recovery and wellbeing is the White Lodge, providing her with physiotherapy, hydrotherapy
and neurofit support, and a community of likeminded and similarly affected individuals and families/carers.  She attends multiple times a week, and her improvement, strength and purpose has rocketed as a result of such a caring, dedicated and crucial organisation.  The White Lodge cares for the disabled community of Surrey, and their support networks, with passion and good humour.  A couple of months ago we as a family competed in the Superhero Triathlon - an all-inclusive event for the disabled - alongside Mum, where White Lodge was wonderfully represented, and Mum completed the triathlon in an inspirational turn. Now, a marathon…

In my industry, it’s ‘Break a leg’.  Maybe not the most helpful for this
undertaking, but the sentiments are still appreciated.  As would be any donations, no matter how small, to spur on one foot after another and support such a valued cause.  In the meantime, I’ll be training hard, and
trying to work out which one song will set a good pace and won’t get too
annoying 2.5hrs in.  As much as I love him, maybe a Sondheim isn’t what I’m looking for here…
