Take the A Day in Her Food challenge to empower women to end hunger in their communities

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

From Monday 10th May, Louise and I will be taking on the challenge of experiencing what a woman living in hunger in Senegal has for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 5 days.

Each day during the challenge we can only use the following ingredients to make our three meals (ingredients are per person) and drink only water.

370g white long grain rice, 40g dried or smoked fish, 40g black eyed beans (cooked), half an onion,1 large tomato,1 tablespoon sugar, 4 tablespoons of peanut oil, or vegetable oil, salt.

Our daily menu will look something like this; http://www.adayinherfood.org/popup/senegal-menu

We are taking on this challenge to raise awareness for the Hunger Project who work to highlight the disproportionate effect that hunger has on women.

Of the 795 million hungry people in the world, over half, 60%, are women and girls.

However, when a woman is empowered and supported, everyone benefits: communities become more resilient, families are healthier, more children go to school, incomes increase, and agricultural productivity improves.

Louise and I cannot completely recreate what it must be like to live in chronic hunger as we will still have our home comforts during the challenge. But as most of you know, Louise and I are both fond of nice things to eat and drink and we hope that you will appreciate this challenge and think a little about the amount that we (as a country not just us two!) consume and waste daily in comparison to other parts of the world.
