Matt needs to lose 20kg urgently · 29 June 2021

As the leading Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) charity in the UK, we want to find effective treatments for DMD and end its devastating impact. We’re going further than anyone has before, and we’re doing it faster, because this generation of people living with DMD can’t wait.

Story

So why am I doing this. Firstly I have had a bad diagnosis from both my endocrinologist and my neurologist, this means that my nerve damage is a lot worse than first imagined and is getting worse rather than improving with treatment.

The doctors believe that as well as all this, I may have an issue around where my brain stem meets my spinal cord. Quite worrying really but imminent head scans and nerve biopsies should give them more information.

They are also concerned because some of my symptoms indicate a possibility of MND. Clearly I’m very concerned.

I need to lose 20kg to take some pressure off the nerves in my legs and also the vegas nerve in my heart as it is affecting my heart rate. I thought that doing this fundraising would not only help me but also the money going towards research into DMD would be useful as I know a young boy with DMD and as much research into it is so necessary.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating muscle-wasting disease. It is the most common and severe form of Muscular Dystrophy. Diagnosed in childhood, it mainly affects boys. There is currently no cure. Started by families affected by the disease, Duchenne UK has one clear aim – to end Duchenne. As the leading Duchenne charity in the UK, we connect the best researchers with industry, the NHS and families to challenge every stage of drug development to make the incurable, curable. Together, we will end Duchenne.
