In November 2016, whilst we were living and studying together at the University of Bristol, my friend Ellie Waind was diagnosed with mediastinal synovial sarcoma.
On 2nd February 2019, after battling with the disease for over two years, Ellie passed away peacefully. It was heartbreaking to watch Ellie fight this disease at such a young age with an incredibly bright future ahead of her, but she fought it with grace and determination. Ellie left behind her a wonderful, tight knit, loving family, an amazing group of friends and a partner who adored her. Her passing was devastating and it will never be forgotten.
In Ellie’s memory, I will be running the 2020 London Marathon for Sarcoma UK, a charity chosen by Ellie herself. Running a marathon for Ellie and fundraising for Sarcoma UK in the process is the least I can do to honour the memory of the strongest and bravest person I've ever known.
Sarcoma UK, also known as the bone and soft tissue charity, has funded more than £2 million into vital sarcoma research. Its mission is to amplify sarcoma awareness, inspire involvement and fund ground-breaking research to transform the lives of everyone affected by sarcoma. It receives no government funding so relies solely on generous voluntary donations to bring about change. Any donation, no matter how big or small, would be so gratefully received.
Thank you all,
Max
