May and Peter O'Neill will be walking the 96 plus miles of The West Highland Way in order to raise much needed funds for West Scotland Deaf Children's Society.
West Scotland Deaf Children's Society was founded in 1947 and is a voluntary organisation that supports deaf children/young people and their families throughout the 12 local authorities of West Scotland.
They provide social, emotional and practical support to families from diagnosis, which can be from as early as 6 weeks.
The family support workers and committee members are all parents of deaf children.
Like most charitable organisations, the Society relies very heavily on donations and fund raising in order to survive.
Our son, Kenneth, was born profoundly deaf 26 years ago. Having had no experience of deafness, as 92% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, the news that Kenneth had a permanent profound hearing loss was devastating to say the least. As a family, we found the emotional strain unbearable, almost like a bereavement.
Without the help and support of the Society directly, and through meeting other parents at events organised by the Society, we feel we may not have been able to support Kenneth in the manner that we did in his drive towards educational achievements.
He is now a very independent young man who has recently achieved a PhD in Mathematics from Strathclyde University.
The West Highland Way runs for 96 miles from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow, past the east shore of Loch Lomond, through the Trossachs National Park to the foot of Ben Nevis at Fort William.
The terrain ranges from lowland moors, dense woodland and rolling hills to the mountainous regions of the Scottish Highlands.
We plan to start on 13th September and complete in 7 days, and of course be prepared for the ever changing Scottish weather.
Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated not only by ourselves but by the Society and most importantly, the children.
Thank you for your support.
