On the 12th of August, Paul & Tony McArthur will take on what will be the biggest physical challenge of their lives.

Paul entered a competition in his work where employees were asked to submit a 25-word entry as to why they feel they should be one of the winners of a brand new bike. As part of Paul's entry, he committed to doing a sponsored cycle to help raise awareness and funding for autism. The destination? Newcastle. Paul had been planning on doing a fundraising event of some description and this seemed a good opportunity, but Newcastle? Really? This was plucked out of thin air with no prior thought or consideration as to the challenge which may potentially lay ahead. When Paul found out he was one of the winners, the initial laughter wore off as the reality dawned on him that he would actually need to do this. He had committed himself and there was no turning back.

Paul told his older brother Tony, much to his amusement... but much to Paul's bemusement, Tony offered to join him on this adventure.

Paul hasn't ridden a bike in 25 years, has never set foot in a gym, and his annual game of 5-a-side football took place 8 months ago. He is 33 years old and has asthma.

Tony hasn't ridden a bike in 25 years, hasn't exercised in 20, he's 39 years old and smokes 20 cigarettes a day.

This challenge will take place on standard road bikes with NO prior training. Why? Because our motto is... TRAINING IS CHEATING!

Paul's nephew, Declan, has severe autism and has no speech, which makes life extremely challenging for both himself as well as his family. Declan attends a weekly activity group organised by Flexicare. This is a group run by volunteers and they help Declan take part in social activities and outings which he otherwise may not have the opportunity to do so. Flexicare rely on donations and fundraising in order to improve the lives of young people and adults with learning disabilities and autism.

Please donate what you can to this very worthwhile cause close to our hearts as the McArthur brothers attempt the impossible.

***If they fail to complete the challenge, they will each donate a sum of £500 towards the Flexicare Fundraising Forum***
