Mike's Run Fat Boy Run

Run Fat Boy Run · 25 April 2019
This is likely to be a
surprise too many people I know but I do like to challenge myself so I have set
myself some challenges over the next 12+months.
So far 14 events entered this year and 10 already entered for next year, 24 in total….how many more can I do……open to suggestions and ideas.
And to think i only started running October 2018, so 13 months ago
They vary in distance from 5km to full marathon distance
and I thought what better way to kick it off by doing The
Virgin London Marathon 2019(was very lucky to gain place via the
ballot).
I can see you all going but why…..its quite simple as I
said to challenge myself and I thought how can I do this, what will
spur me on to do it, what charity can I help so I thought about the trip
Lexi & i took in March/April 2018 to Australia where Lexi got to meet her
great gran for the first time. I hadn’t seen her for 11 years either
so it was a very special trip for us both.
Now this is the real reason I’m doing this and chosen
the charity listed,Dementia UK.
You see my nan is 96, she had a health scare a year or
so before went out so I just had to get out there before its
too late…..don’t worry peeps she is still with us and going as strong
as ever.
She is also suffering from dementia and I realised just
how severe this was when I got there because she didn’t know who
I was or who Lexi was, it was gutting to see. We went
out on a couple trips with her and it was great and she really
enjoyed seeing us all and just being out and about with her family.
It was difficult when it was time to say good bye and
mainly because I knew that the moment my back was turned, she was
likely to have little or no recollection of our meeting that day or
any of the other days we’d seen her. It was extremely hard when
we had to leave, Lexi saw I was down when we got back to hotel and
asked if I was ok, is it your grandma. I told her yes and that I’d miss
her lots. Lexi came over and gave me the biggest, tightest hug and
rubbed my back saying “don’t worry daddy it’ll be ok”.
Lexi was superb and really enjoyed her time meeting her
and it really made a huge impact on her, she was very proud to of met her and it really showed on our return home when was
asked this question.
“So Lexi what was your favourite part of being in
Australia?” now Lexi could of said anything from “Oh, that’s easy
going to McDonalds”, “going to the Zoo”, “going in a helicopter”, “going on a jet boat ride” but no she totally blew me away and melted my heart by saying this without hesitation and with the biggest smile on her face “I got to meet my greatgran for the very first time”.
So these events entered and all monies raised is for
DementiaUK, so all I ask is please give what you can, every penny counts
to such a worthy cause.
This is for you Grandma xxx
