ME Research UK exists solely to fund high quality biomedical studies into the causes and treatment of ME/CFS. This illness affects approximately 250,000 people in the UK but is neither well understood nor, in many cases, properly recognised. We fund highly regarded, peer-reviewed research worldwide.

Story

Not many people have heard of M.E. or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) despite it affecting an estimated 250,000 people in the UK. I didn't really know what it was either until my sister unfortunately became unwell and was diagnosed with M.E.

I will be climbing Ben Lomond to raise money for M.E. Research - I am not a very fit person so this will be a challenge! Will be doing the walk in August on a day where the weather is good!

What is M.E.?

M.E. is a long-term chronic neurological condition that causes symptoms which can affect the nervous and immune system. People with M.E. experience fatigue, debilitating pain, flu-like symptoms, difficulty thinking and concentrating and much much more.

Symptoms can vary in each person with M.E. and it not only affects them physically, it also can put a huge strain on mental health. Many people with M.E. can find it isolating as many days can be spent bed-bound and with a lack of knowledge about the condition, others can be ignorant of the fact that there can be bad days and better days with M.E.

M.E. is also being too tired and in too much pain to hold a hairdryer. It's not being able to stand in a shower, it's not knowing how well you will feel until each day comes around, it's feeling like you are letting people down by cancelling plans, it's having to put up with ignorant comments, it's having to shop for walking aids at a young age when everything is catered for older people and it's having to put your life on hold.

Why donate?

M.E. is a condition which totally changes people's lives. It can stop people from working, from having a social life and really affects quality of life.

There is also no cure or real treatment for M.E. except for finding ways to try and tackle symptoms but not actually getting to the root cause.

I want to raise money for M.E. Research so that we can actually work out why people get M.E. and how we can treat and prevent it. I also want to raise money so that my sister and the thousands of other people with M.E. can get better and live life to the full again.

Thank you so much for reading this, even if you can't donate, a share would be great to help spread the word!
