For the animals. For the planet. For the pizza!

This month I am participating in Veganuary and Team Humane League Philadelphia's Veganuary Pizza Challenge. I'll be eating vegan all month and joining Team Humane for their Monday night group runs, and if I stick to these commitments, I'll earn a free pizza from Blackbird Pizzeria! It's like Book It from when we were kids–only a lot more humane, and with some exercise involved.

I have been moving away from eating meat and consuming other animal products as I have learned more about factory farming and as the president-elect of the United States has filled airwaves and the internet with hateful rhetoric about people who are different from him. My reactions to his behavior intersected with the knowledge I am gaining about modern animal agriculture practices, plus my personal relationships with the animals in my life (mostly pets of friends and family). My feelings about human rights, I have learned, extend to the individual rights of animals as well.

I thought that participating in Veganuary would be a great way for me to try a vegan diet with social and online support. When I learned that I could win a pizza, my decision was made!
