Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In September 2021 (this was 2020 but due to Covid it has been moved to next year) I will be taking part in a 50km walk on the Brecon Beacons and raising money for Rape Crisis. As a charity, they do so much for women and girls that have been raped, sexually assaulted or experienced any form of sexual violence. They provide a safe space, counselling and much more to aid recovery and help victims through such a sad and heartbreaking tragedy. I have personally seen how hard the staff and volunteers at the charity work, so I am immensely proud to be able to help them, and show my support in any way I can to ensure that they keep providing the help that so many people out there need.
Last year, the charity provided over 650,000 sessions for survivors, but sadly this is not enough, and quite frankly shocking to know that there are more women out there still waiting, and being haunted by their experience with little professional help.
20% of women and 4% of men have experienced some form of sexual assault from the age of 16. Waiting lists are unfortunately very long, and the time taken between registering interest and receiving counselling can be months. All of the donations go directly into expanding the resources and to facilitate more counselling sessions for those in desperate need.
See below for some statistics dated 2013 (imagine how much those numbers have grown since then - it is hard to comprehend):
- Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men (aged 16 - 59) experience rape, attempted rape or sexual assault by penetration in England and Wales alone every year; that's roughly 11 of the most serious sexual offences (of adults alone) every hour.
- Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence/assault report to the police
- Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence
