Raising funds for King’s College Hospital Charity Fund - Liver Cancer Research:

Sadly Mark Thornberry passed away in June but we are keen to continue to support his fundraising efforts for this Charity.

Mark, a passionate endurance runner was diagnosed with liver cancer and given 6/9 months to live in June 2017. Despite this he kept running ultramarathons, and whilst beating the odds, over the next 18 months, ran amongst other races, the Grand Union Canal Race (Birmingham to London) 145 miles, Bello Gallico 100 miler (Belgium), Javelina Jundred 100 miler (Arizona, USA)

Unfortunately in January 2019 following major surgery that removed over half of his liver and then the metastasis (spread) of his cancer, he has found it very difficult to run - though tells me he will be on the starting line for the London Landmarks. Post surgery wound issues, tumour pain and the side effects from daily chemotherapy have conspired to limit his physical activity, but he is supporting friends and fellow runners, who unprompted, have picked up the cudgel on his behalf and continue to fundraise enthusiastically.

Mark's prognosis is uncertain, his tumour burden has worsened and he was taken off a Clinical Trial at the end of last year due to progression. However, he is really positive and has said time and time again that there is a test tube out there with his name on it that will give him respite and a decent amount of time.

The funds are earmarked for a research project that includes; building a (complex Big Data) model to predict how liver cancer is going to behave, stratify treatment options according to the therapies available, model the data to find alternative ways to treat the cancer. Work has started and a Doctoral candidate in Computational Biology has been appointed and is working full time on the project

Mark blogs about his ultrarunning and cancer here: https://thorners.wordpress.com/
