Not the Camino de Santiago · 30 October 2020

More people than ever suffer from chronic kidney disease & the numbers are increasing. Treatments exist - eg. dialysis & transplant - but still no cure. This needs to change! We raise funds for kidney research, fund training courses for renal staff & provide amenities for North West kidney patients.

Story

When my kidney transplant buddy rang with a mad plan I was all ears ...

Sarah and I met through transplantation, both receiving kidney transplants. Since then, we’ve climbed Snowdon together, walked The Great Wall of China and this year in October we’d planned to walk part of the Camino de Santiago to raise awareness for Transplantation.

Well that was the plan until Covid got in the way.

So back to that phone call and Sarah’s mad idea that despite ‘lockdown’ we should do a ‘virtual walk’  from the UK to Santiago in Spain about 1232 miles or 8 miles a day for 154 days.  Sounded completely crazy, but I found myself agreeing and that's exactly what we’ve done.

Despite the wind and rain of a typical ‘Northern’ summer, we’ve religiously pulled on our boots each day and become both ‘virtual’ and ‘socially distanced’ walking buddies. On occasions we’ve had to dig pretty deep to stick to the plan, but in the end it’s been worth every soaking and every blister to raise awareness of just what a difference organ transplantation can make to people's lives.

It's a difficult time for all charities at the moment and we appreciate that you may have a favourite Charity that you are currently supporting, but if you would like to make a donation to Kidneys for Life, we can personally testify that you really will be making a difference

…… We’re both proof of that!
