Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Sunday 19th May 2019 Michelle, Jenny, Melanie and Leah will be completing the Manchester 10K run for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, and all the funds we raise are going to the burns unit charity.
Here’s our story......

Most of our friends will remember that over 9 years ago on the 15th January 2010 Charlie Whalley, Michelle’s son, pulled a large pan of boiling water over himself. He was only 15 months old at the time. His body was shutting down and the brilliant team of doctors and nurses at Furness General Hospital saved Charlie’s life. When he was stable he was transferred to Manchester Children’s Hospital burns unit where he stayed for 3 weeks, then spent months being treated as an outpatient. Charlie burnt 10% of his skin away which is classed as a significant burn injury. He was operated on and skin was taken from his right thigh and grafted onto his right shoulder, arm and chest.

Those of you who know Charlie will know that 9 years on he is thriving! Charlie is passionate about football and is living a full and adventurous life. Charlie still needs daily physiotherapy to keep his skin graft supple and flexible. Charlie is scarred and always will be, but he is confident and not ashamed of how he looks.
The incredible team of specialists in the burns unit at the hospital have given Charlie and his family chance of a normal family life. They are so grateful and want to do what they can to help other burns survivors.

2019 is a very special year. Charlie and Michelle have written 2 books to go on the burns unit at the Manchester Children’s Hospital, to give hope and reassurance to patients and families that having a burn injury and a skin graft does not stop you living your dreams and having adventures! The books are in mock up stage and hoping to go to print this summer.

2019 is also the 10th birthday of the New Manchester Children’s Hospital. The charity team has chosen 10 cases, one from each year over the last 10 years that showcase the remarkable, specialist life saving and life changing work of the hospital.  Charlie has been chosen as one of their cases.

So we have been invited to join ‘Team 10’. We’ll be running with 10 other families and their friends, celebrating the work of the hospital and raising awareness and funds for this incredible charity!

None of us are athletes. Jenny is 69 and started running at 65. Melanie has never done any sporting event before. Leah has never done the Manchester 10K. Michelle broke her leg 3 years ago and didn’t think she’d be able to run 10K again.  We’re all nervous and excited and have been training steadily.

So this is a big deal on many levels.
We’d be so very grateful for any support you’re able to give us as a team.
Your kindness will go directly to the burns unit charity, and will support the project of Charlie’s book that he has written to help other burns survivors in the hospital undergoing surgery and treatment.

Thank you so so much!!!
Wish us luck!
With love and smiles
Michelle, Jenny, Melanie and Leah
