We provide palliative and end-of-life care to adults with a life-limiting illness

Story

Between 22nd January - 2nd  Febuary 2010, Melissa will be climbing the highest free-standing mountain in the world – Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. At a height of 19,340 feet or 5,900 metres (that’s almost six kilometres!) Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, the tallest volcano in the world and one of the worlds seven highest summits.

The trek will take Melissa through the rainforests of Tanzania and up the Lemosho route of the mountain over 8 gruelling days and nights. She will ascended almost six kilometres and walk over 90 kilometres in total.

Melissa will be funding all of her expedition costs, so all donations made will go straight to charity.

Why raise money for Countess Of Brecknock Hospice?

In 2007 Melissa's Granny was diagnosed with Cancer, it was found too late the cancer was progressive and nothing could be done. Melissa's Granny was moved into The Countess Of Brecknock Hospice Andover, where she was cared for and passed away peacefully. The Countess of Brecknock Hospice was founded with the support of Macmillan Cancer Relief the dedicated multi-disciplinary team helped to ensure that Melissa's Granny was able to live as full a life as possible within the limitations of her illness. The staff also provided sympathetic support and care to Melissa's family in their time of need.

During this time Melissa was unable to visit her Granny due to working in America, nor was she able to thank the hospice and their dedicated staff for there care and support. Melissa decided to give something back to the hospice by setting herself this challenge to raise as much as possible for them.

Melissa's Grandad sadly passed away in June. Melissa's Kilimanjaro Challenge is in memory of Pam & Jim Gray - Granny & Grandad.
