Story
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on charities, with the cancellation of thousands of events and the loss of billions in income. At a time when vulnerable members of society need them most, charities have had to cut services, furlough staff and some have even shut down. Captain Tom stepped up to help, taking on his famous walk to support the NHS Covid-19 appeal and inspiring millions to donate to the cause. I will be celebrating the extraordinary spirit of Captain Tom my way and help my chosen charity.
As a retired Music Teacher, I have spent most of my life bringing joy to people through music. On the weekend of Captain Tom's 101st birthday, I shall be setting up my electric piano in my front garden, overlooking Dane Park in Margate, I will be playing 100 popular songs, stretching from the 1920s to the present day, including songs from the golden age of Jazz, pop, film and stage musicals, culminating in "You'll Never Walk Alone", which, of course, was recorded by Captain Tom during the last year of his life.
Hopefully my neighbours and local friends will be able to listen, passing by, or out walking in the park. We might be able to stream some of it live on Facebook (watch this space!). It will probably take about 5 hours altogether, with a few breaks during the day, and will be (subject to the weather staying dry) held on the Saturday (1st May).
I would be delighted if my many friends around the country/world will join me in this, to help raise much-needed funds for the Captain Tom Foundation.
