100 mile MGS dash for Pakistan

Pakistan has recently suffered unprecedented floods which have caused widespread devastation. Around twenty million Pakistani people have been affected in one of the worst human disasters ever recorded.

At MGS there is a sense that we should respond to such a tragedy. It is important to get boys involved, so they understand the huge scale of the devastation caused by the floods; and have an opportunity to be part of an effort to help the victims.

We plan to have a 100 mile MGS dash for Pakistan as a sponsored event. The idea is that every boy and staff member is to run 100 metres, passing a baton from person to person. With 1600 boys and staff, each running 100 metres will together run a collective distance of 160 kilometres equating to an astonishing 100 miles; hence the 100 miles dash billing. The strength of this idea is that it does involve everyone, and shows the staggering feats that can be achieved by people working together in a whole school effort.

It is envisage that any money raised would be donated to a charity that is involved with relief work out in Pakistan. We have therefore contacted a charity called Doctors Worldwide, based locally in Stockport. They have two clinics in Pakistan providing medical support for flood victims. They have recently been advised by the World Health Organisation to prepare for an outbreak of water born diseases particularly cholera. It is expected that many people will die as a result of contracting such diseases, unless they receive antibiotics administered properly to them. Each of their clinics provides free treatment to flood victims; and treat around 200 patients a day. One clinic costs around £10,000 a month to operate. We therefore hope that our MGS dash, manages to raise funds to run one of these clinics for a good few months, and that in our own way we can have a big effect locally where these clinics are based, even though in the scheme of things our efforts will be a small contribution to the help needed overall in Pakistan.
