Great North Run 2022 · 11 September 2022 ·

The Foundation, established by Willmott Dixon Group, is part of a community investment programme, giving money and staff time to charities and local community projects. It also backs causes supported by our employees in their own time and makes a contribution to their fundraising.

Story

You may know that Ian Waterland retired in April after more than 10 years with the business. Ian retired following being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Ian is a good friend to many of you in the business, to our supply chain partners and someone who I have known for over 20 years. Ian recently attended the Willmott Dixon ''Building on Better Awards' and was recognised for his fantastic commitment, drive, loyalty, mentorship and contribution to our business and its people.

Back in May I ran the Great MCR Half and promised to also do the Great North Run in support of the MND association, so here I am. Many of you supported me already, for which I am truly grateful, raising in excess of £5000 so have to keep up my end of the bargain!!

Some of you may also know that I sustained a back injury (called Cauda Equina) in Late August last year which has left me with nerve damage in my spine and left me unable to walk.  Following a decent stint in hospital and extensive physio I have made a good recovery and consider myself really lucky. I took up running as part of my recovery regime (running of sorts as I’m not really built for speed) which has proven to be a bit of a challenge but something I have enjoyed.

Ian supported me through my recovery, which is the sort of guy he is, we had some interesting discussions comparing symptoms and respective ailments, and I wanted to do something to support him (directly or indirectly). To this end, I committed to ‘run’ the Great North Run to both heighten awareness of MND and raise funds for the MND association. The MND association are supporting Ian and his family and it would be great if you could support me in this endeavour.

As part of its social and community investment commitment, Willmott Dixon, wants to back the personal causes of the people who work for the company. Your contribution will therefore be enhanced by The Willmott Dixon Foundation for every donation made through this ‘JustGiving’ page to the MND association. Please be assured that your contribution to my fundraising will reach my charity.
