WE MADE IT!!!
Why CWS is so special and needs our help
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: (CWS) Child Welfare Scheme will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.Why support us?
When the Board was choosing CWS’s 2nd mountain charity trek, taking part ourselves was well in our minds when we selected the biggest challenge of all: climbing to the base camp of the highest mountain on earth, where temperatures fall below freezing with lows of -10 degrees! Having seen for ourselves two years ago the fantastic projects CWS has in Nepal, we are fully committed to raising as much as we can for them, no matter how much pain it causes!
• We’ll be trekking for 6-9 hours every day, up and down mountains that make Brecon Beacons look like the desert
• We’ll be exchanging hot showers for lukewarm bucket washes, and flush toilets for longdrops
• At the end of a long hard day trekking, the thing we will want most in the world is a nice cold beer or a glass of wine to relax and soothe our aching muscles, but even this we will be deprived of as alcohol is banned during the trek due to the altitude!
Luckily at the end we’ll be visiting the projects, and we are sure that all the pain was worthwhile.
Why Nepal?
Nepal is the least developed country in Asia, with years of conflict worsening the poverty.
Out of every 100 children in Nepal:
• 42 live below the poverty line
• 48 will be malnourished
• 42 will be involved in child labour
• 39 will not complete primary education
• 7 will die before their 5th birthday
Please sponsor us to help support these children, and before you decide how much, please think about what you spent on your last night out, your last shopping spree, or your last weekend away, and give as generously as you can. We are covering the full trip costs ourselves, so every penny you donate will go directly to CWS.
How your donation could help:
£5 could help educate a child, by providing them with school books for 1 year
£10 could provide medical help for a child living in a remote mountain community
£25 could prevent health problems and accidents associated with traditional stoves, by building an improved cooking stove for a family in Nepal
£40 could provide protection and safety for a girl at high risk of abuse, by paying for an emergency home for a month
£50 could mean a street child no longer has to go hungry, by buying them a meal every day for a year
£100 could give a disadvantaged young person a new start in life, by paying for a month’s vocational training
£250 could help treat patients and save lives, by paying the salary of a doctor for a whole month
£800 £800 can cover the salary of an ambulance driver for a year
£1,000 £1,000 can support 100 children and their families by paying the salary of a
a doctor doctor for a whole month
£1,500 £1,500 can buy enough medicine for our mobile clinic to last a whole year!

Final Result
We made it. 15 trekkers, supported by trek leader Sid and doctor Jules, 6 Sherpas and 8 porters, set off on 10 November from Lukla and on 20 November we all made it to Everest Base Camp, despite many illnesses and tummy bugs on the way. The climb was very strenuous and the facilities on the way were not what we were used to, but the team worked really well together and supported each other to a quite remarkable degree. We are all delighted to have made it and want to thank all our supporters for their encouragement and donations!
Training Updates
In May, Ruth and I walked from Siena to Rome (178 miles) over 14 days. In truth that was pretty flat (only one 6,000 foot mountain), so in late June we embarked on stage 1 of our "End to End " walk from Land's End to John O'Groats by walking the 130 miles from Boscastle to Land's End. That was actually more hilly and (according to my new GPS) we went up nearly 25.000 feet, so we were approaching the height of Everest, but over 11 days. Needless to say, the fact that we were walking in the wrong direction may need a little expalining, which we will be happy to do over a drink or two...
August Training Update:
Walked from home to Limehouse Basin over Hampstead Heath and along Regent's Canal, say 10 Miles.
Walked from home to Moat Mount along the Dollis Valley Green Walk and back, say 24 miles (including various diversions).
Joined the CWS training trip in Keswick and climbed Skiddaw and Cat Bells.
September:
Went to Switzerland for 4 days and climbed two mountains there. Then walked several 15 mile plus trips across London.
October:
Joined up with AC and others to walk from Eastbourne up to Beachy Head and across the Seven Sisters and back, plus various shorter walks.
November:
Departure getting closer. Last minute training in hand amongst the trial packing and last minute emergencies. Everything going to plan...
