Cycle For Orkney is the second Annual Charity cycle ride Organised by Steven Waterman, this year giving the option of a 10 KM family route, 40 mile intermediate route or a 60 mile charity cycle ride. The Day is open to all classes of cyclist from the novice rider to those who would give Sir Braddley Wiggins a run for his money. The ride is being organised by Orkneys only Army Reserve Unit, 10 (ORKNEY) Field Troop Royal Engineers. The aim of the event is for members of the Army Reserve Unit and the local community to give a little something back. whilst undertaking a physically demanding yet enjoyable cycle ride. The day will start with a family event starting at 0830 hrs with a ride from the British legion in Kirkwall around Scapa bay and the Peedie sea before heading back to the Legion. Registration for the 60 and 40 mile events will start at 1000 hrs with the event starting at 1100 hrs. Both the 60 and 40 mile rides will start at the Royal British Legion in Orkneys Capital city of Kirkwall. the 60 mile ride heading out towards the airport before turning right onto the B9052 (opposite St Andrews School) then following the road past the entrance to the first Churchill barrier and through Holm and heading towards Scapa - the 60 mile route will then follow the same route that the 40 mile cyclists will take - around the coastal route, past Scapa Beach and the resting place of the Royal Oak, before heading onwards through Orphir Before reaching a pit stop this time at the Royal British Legion in Orkneys second largest town of Stromness. Once all cyclists have refuelled their bodies the event will start its second leg from Stromness back to Kirkwall this time passing through Stenness and Finstown. The day will culminate with a small wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial outside St Magnus Cathedral. On completion of the event all riders and supporters will be invited into the Royal British Legion Kirkwall to toast their success.
