Action on Postpartum Psychosis supports women and families affected by Postpartum Psychosis (PP) across the UK. We provide information and peer support, facilitate research into PP, raise awareness of this rare yet severe postnatal mental illness and campaign for improved services.

Story

Around 10 years ago after giving birth I was hospitalised with postpartum psychosis.

This month Sinead and I are getting on the Thames in order to raise awareness and funds for the charity Action on Postpartum Psychosis. Postpartum psychosis is a severe and treatable mental illness which can happen in the first few days or weeks after giving birth. It usually requires medication and time in hospital. I was initially admitted to an adult mental health ward and later transferred to a Mother and Baby Unit where my daughter stayed with me.

Action on Postpartum Psychosis offers many resources to mothers and their families. There are resources and an online forum. There is excellent peer support. APP holds events, conferences and training. They conduct research and campaigning. And much more... APP helped me and my husband when we were really struggling by providing excellent information and support. I am very grateful. APP also campaign for and work with Mother and Baby Units across the UK. Having the opportunity to stay in an MBU was invaluable to me.
