Story

Edward Dent was an extraordinary boy but probably all his parents wanted was for him to be delightfully ordinary and healthy – to do the things children get up to as they play, learn and grow into the world around them. Sadly, he never had that chance.  At the age of 7, in August 1987, his life was cut short by a rare form of cancer.

Edward’s Trust, which is there to support people at what is invariably the most painful period in their lives – for a child, it’s dealing with the death of a parent, or brother or sister; in the case of a parent, it’s the almost unbearable experience of losing a child, as Edward’s parents, Peter and Hilary, went through all those years ago.  From their sorrow, however, Peter and Hilary salvaged the determination to do something for others facing similar trauma by setting up a charity in memory of their son.

This is how Edward’s Trust was born – and, since then, this remarkable charity has helped hundreds of bereaved children and families cope with the devastation of grief.  They do this by treating each individual’s grief as unique where the support given by the charity’s skilled counsellors and therapists is specific to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of that individual.  It might involve one-to-one counselling, group activities, retreats, working in schools, or remembrance events.

Edward’s Trust doesn’t just offer ‘talking therapies’. They’ll also use creative methods such as art and sculpture, as well as complementary therapies, including meditation, reflexology, aromatherapy and stress-release techniques.
