Mick Fryer, Get well soon. · 7 March 2021

PAWS is dedicated to helping animals in need around the Pennine towns of Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. We operate a no kill policy. We rescue and rehome animals and care for those waiting for a home. We rely on volunteers and donations to fund our work and hold regular fundraising events.

Story

If you’ve even been to a race near the Calder Valley you’re more than likely to have met Mick Fryer, be it running or taking your photo at your fell running best or muddiest, he’s always there to give you words of encouragement - reminding you to smile and momentarily letting you forget about how much your legs hurt! After the race we all go home and constantly refresh Facebook waiting for Mick’s photos to be uploaded. He never watermarks his pictures or asks for anything in return, he just does it for the love of the sport.

Over the last year a lot has happened, and without racing keeping us all connected it’s easy to lose track of everyone’s comings and goings. Unfortunately, this year hasn’t been the best for Mick.
In February 2021, Mick was diagnosed with colon cancer. He’s already had his colon removed but the cancer is still in his bowel and chemo is scheduled. He has decided to move from Walsden to be closer to his family in Brighouse.

To show our appreciation for Mick’s contribution to the sport, and show we’re thinking of him, we’re raising money for a get well soon present. As he’s moving away from the west end of the valley, his wife Carol suggested a painting of Stoodley Pike, a place Mick has enjoyed running and supporting races over the years. this target has now been met (thanks everyone). Mick would love and leftover donations to be given to PAWS (PENNINE ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY), a Todmorden animal rescue centre that Mick has been heavily involved in over the years. so please help support Mick and a charity that's close to his heart.
