Midwives on the Move! · 16 September 2017

The aim of Liverpool Women's Charity is to raise funds to improve the care and support given to the patients and their families. Money raised helps to provide services and facilities above what is normally provided through NHS funding.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Liverpool Womens "Midwives on the Move"JustGiving page. My name is Angela, I am a midwife at Liverpool Womens Hospital. I work as part of a team of midwives that provide high risk Obstetric and midwifery care at Liverpool Womens Hospital

What is Obstetric HDU?

Obstetric HDU is where women, who may still be pregnant or have just had their baby, with potentially life threatening conditions are cared for safely, without the need for them to be transferred to other hospitals and thus leaving them separated from their babies. If a patient has a large haemorrhage or very high blood pressure then they are cared for in our HDU department until deemed fit for home or transfer to the Maternity Ward. Sometimes a stay in HDU is a long time... we aim to make the environment and surrounding in these rooms more homely and comfortable.

Caroline, Andy & Baby Miles.

A little over 2 years ago, I cared for a lady called Caroline, who was 24 weeks pregnant. Caroline had been transferred to Liverpool from Stoke in pre-term labour. Her baby, Miles couldn't be cared for in her local unit as he was too small and too premature. Caroline away from her home & family was looked after by myself in our Obstetric HDU department where she had extensive monitoring, carefully watching both her and Miles unborn condition. HDU is a place where women who are pregnant or have had there baby, are cared for when they have serious, sometime life threatening conditions. Baby Miles, was born by emergency caesarean section, on the very edge of viability at 24 weeks, after his monitoring took a turn for the worse, his Mum was cared for in HDU there after by an expert team of highly trained midwives and Dr's. Thankfully, our little Miles survived, he is a thriving two year old boy. Keeping his Mummy, daddy and Big Sister Mya VERY busy. Caroline, fit and ready to embrace any challenges, bravely went onto raise vital funds for our very HDU department. Running the Liverpool Half marathon and the London Marathon TWICE... Caroline had donated a fabulous £1,200 to Liverpool Womens... a EXCELLENT achievement for which we cannot thank her enough.

So.... we Midwives here at Liverpool have decided we want to match that fabulous amount by completing a sponsored walk.

On the 16th September 2017 we aim to walk the 9 miles walk from Liverpool Pier Head down to Otterspool Promenade and back. We will be collecting small change along the way and hope to chat and walk with ex-patients that also have had a birth and/or care experience on our Delivery Suite, HDU or MLU.

Come along and join us.... we want to chat to you and have cuddles with the babies we helped to bring safely into the world.

If you cant join us, then why not donate a small amount to our cause. Any money earned will go towards new décor and fittings to make the HDU rooms more homely. Any money, whatever the amount will make such a valid contribution and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
