Milly's Smiles provides a Holdall Bag, known as a Milly Bag for all children who have been newly diagnosed with a cancer related illness, and admitted into hospital. The bag contains lots of essential and luxury items that will help them through the first frightening weeks of their journey.

Story

Hi, Thank you for getting this far onto my Justgiving Page!

In July 2016 myself and four work colleagues decided to complete the London to Paris Cycle Ride in 2017... During the deliberation and initial planning for this event two life changing events occurred in my personal life ' 1 - I found out I was to become a Dad in June 2017 and 2 - my Partner Danielle found out that her Mum Angela had terminal Cancer and since sadly passed away in January 2017'.

As the London to Paris Ride was unable to be completed in June 2017 myself and the team decided to enroll ourselves onto the London to Amsterdam Cycle Ride in August 2017. At this point our  cycle team gained two further members 'Paul & Darren' who I know far too well being my Brother in Law & Father in Law. Who will be raising money & riding for St Catherine's Hospice and in memory of Angela.

After deciding to do the ride I asked each rider to choose a charity to raise funds for. After a few days of thinking about which charity to choose, someone suggested I ride for a charity named 'Milly's Smiles'.

I would personally please like to ask for each person to take a look on the website and have a read through the 'About Milly' page.

The page explains Milly's life story and gives an insight into her battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia from age 11 through to her sadly passing away Aged 11.

Incredibly Milly's family set up the charity 'Milly's Smiles' in 2015 which I will be supporting for the charity ride.

Milly's Smiles provide a welcome pack to each newly diagnosed family admitted onto ward 84, at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, with items that will help during the first few days and weeks of their hospital stay.

Along with this they endeavor to offer items that will bring a smile to the faces of the children and let families know that people are thinking about them. Simply Milly's Smiles would like to make parents feel as though they have been given a hug and told that people do understand and care.

The 'Milly's Smiles' Welcome Pack;

The Milly's Smiles welcome packs are given to every new family admitted onto Ward 84, and are fantastic quality. The bag is a sports back and has multiple functions. Inside the bag is a lovely soft fleecy blanket, giving the child a touch of home comfort. There is a neck pillow, this is hand made and can be used by any member of the family. The bag also has a thermal cup which allows parents to make hot drinks and take them back to the ward, as the cup has a secure lid. There is a clear juice bottle which enables the nurses to monitor the fluid intake of the child, and also looks funky with the Milly's Smiles Logo!

The pack also contains a Morf - most children will lose their hair with the chemotherapy and this gives them a chance to experiment with the bandana look before their hair has fallen out. The pack also contains a notebook, pen and plastic wallet. During the initial admission time, families are given so much information that having somewhere to write notes and store leaflets is very much appreciated. There is also a wash bag containing toiletries including shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and baby wipes. The pack also contains a rainbow knitted elephant soft toy :)

I would really like to reach out to everyone with this charity event. Support myself and most importantly Milly's Smiles over then next 9 months, and lets make a difference together.

My other four colleagues and good friends have also chosen as equally important charities and causes so don't forget to give their pages a read and a few pounds if possible.

Thankyou very much.

Mike
