I will be joining nearly 500 colleagues from across Cardiff and Vale University Health Board by taking part in this year's Cardiff Half Marathon and raising funds for the Make it Better Fund which supports projects over and above NHS funding.  Projects benefit staff, patients and visitors from across Wales and beyond. 

The reason I am raising money for this excellent fund, is because as Chair of the Make it Better Bids Panel, I've witnessed first hand, the benefit it brings to all.   Some examples which have been funded via the Make it Better Fund are the provision of the hospital-wide Free WiFi network for our patients and visitors which enables all to remain in contact with loved ones, catch up on the latest news or view their favourite television programme:  many art projects have been supported at the HeARTh Gallery in University Llandough and funding was granted to ensure all wards have dementia-friendly activities available in the day rooms. 

The latest way donations are making a difference is the introduction of new blue crockery for every ward across the UHB.    Research shows that blue plates help people eat more, which is essential for some of our patients.  These plates are specifically designed to be easy to use, even if you only have the use of one arm, are visual impaired or suffer from dementia.
