£2500 would fund 10 families for 12 months to do their sign language lessons with Deaf Action.
They would have to fund this themselves in order to simply learn to communicate with their child.
Read a little of our story below and why we are raising funds.
Our story:
Our children, Marlie and Brody were born with hearing and they both lost this within the first year. Marlie was late diagnosed at 18months and Brody diagnosed profoundly deaf at 10months.
Marlie was the first deaf/hard of hearing person we had in either of our families and quite frankly we had absolutely no idea what we were doing or where to start. It was quite overwhelming.
We were fortunate from day 1 to be introduced to the teams at NDCS who were incredible with the support they offered including organised weekends such as newly diagnosed, family sign and preparing your child for school.
It was here and during the process waiting for Marlies cochlear implant that we saw the benefit and significance of sign language and fell in love with it and how it brought so much joy to marlie being able to be understood.
Since then we have had brody who has cochlear implants too and is a sign user and we as a family continue to learn.
This is our way of supporting families that may have struggled with sourcing courses and support over the last 2 years during lockdown whilst Introducing them to the deaf community across Scotland.
