Story

Make A Wish and Milla

In 2012 Make A Wish UK granted our daughter Milla a special wish. Milla, her twin sister Louisa, my wife Rini and I, spent a wonderful week at Give Kids The World Village in Florida and visited the Disney theme parks.

Milla, her twin sister Louisa and their elder triplet sister Jewel, were born 16 weeks premature in 2006. Jewel sadly lived only 17 days. Milla and Louisa spent 6 months in hospital, had operations on their eyes and Louisa an operation on her heart.

Milla was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. She was unable to walk or talk and was fed by a stomach tube (gastrostomy). Despite all the challenges in her life, Milla was the happiest little girl, always smiling. She loved people and always brought happiness with her everywhere.

In 2016, while on a family trip to Indonesia to see my wife's family, Milla became ill suddenly. Unfortunately, Milla passed away from sepsis aged only 10. It was a devastating blow to us all.

Fundraising

Before we lost Milla and since, I have been an active fundraiser for Make A Wish. I know the value of a wish. Seeing your child happy and relaxed is priceless. A wish takes away the pain, discomfort, disability and illness for a time and lets these wonderful children be children, not patients.

I have raised approximately £16,000 for Make A Wish UK and organised and taken part in many different challenges; running the London Marathon, cycling John O'Groats to Lands End, 1,000 miles in 10 days, cycling solo coast to coast from Aberystwyth in Wales to Lowestoft in Suffolk in 3 days and walking the length of the Worcester to Birmingham canal (33 miles) in a day.

The Challenge

As part of the Walk for Wishes in September, I am planning to walk from Worcester where I live, to Cheltenham, over a 40 mile route. I am aiming to complete the walk in under 12 hours, averaging 3.3 miles an hour including rest stops.

The route is Worcester - Malvern - Upton-upon-Severn - Eckington - Bishops Cleeve - Cheltenham

As a fit 52 year old, but much more used to cycling, this is a tough challenge that will test my mental and physical endurance, stamina and willpower.

I will be walking solo starting at 6am and hoping to reaching Cheltenham train station before 6pm to catch the much more comfortable and faster 17:59 train back to Worcester. It is a race against the clock. If I miss the train, I have another 2 hours to wait for the next one!

So, please get behind the walk and if you can, donate to my fundraising page and let's support Make A Wish and remember my beautiful, happy daughter, Milla.

Thank you!
