Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. We are Charlie Shickell, Brad Halliday , Phillipa Paxman and Claire Wyatt! We are 4 cyclists in our twenties.

We came up with the idea of Mind Over Miles in January 2020 after a tough year during Covid. Mind Over Miles was started as a small project raising awareness of the benefits of cycling and adventure on people's mental health. The last year has been testing for everyone's wellbeing and cycling has helped each of us massively therefore we wanted to encourage more and more people to get out on their bikes.

This year , we decided to host our first charity event. We will be starting on the 20th of August. This will be a 1000 mile bike ride over 14 days. Starting in Lands End in Cornwall and finishing in John O Groats in Scotland. This is a mammoth task and we can't wait for the challenge. We will be unsupported but encourage anyone to come to join us for a day!

We are raising money for Adventure Therapy UK who offer participation in adventurous activities as a form of therapy. They focus on a persons' ability to do something, rather than the barriers which may appear to prohibit such pursuits. The activities they do provide an opportunity to become self-aware and recognize the things have been accomplished: scaling a rockface, paddling a kayak along the coast or across a lake, being in the sea and surfing a wave for the first time; facing initial (and understandable) fear and trepidation - abseiling, riding a horse or jumping from rocks into the sea. Interacting with others and making friends.

Adventure therapy is often referred to as activity-based counseling. However, as a charity, they may work alongside individuals or groups who need nothing more than an opportunity to get outside, in an environment that may not be familiar or natural to them. A chance to interact with family or friends and learn or challenge themselves - whether that is physically, emotionally, or a combination of the two.

This is a great charity and thank you all so much for the support!
