Story
I’m joining the Sands #challenge13 to help fund research into stillbirth and neonatal death because it is unacceptable that today in the UK 13 babies will die before, during, or shortly after their birth, and a further 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in loss.
My own daughter, Alice, was born 6 weeks early on 25 September 2007 and died just 15 days later. I still feel the impact of her devastating loss now, which I am sure will affect me and my family for the rest of our lives.
When I first got involved with Sands, the Why 17 campaign was highlighting the fact that 17 babies died in the UK every day through stillbirth or neonatal death. That figure was reduced to 15 per day four years ago and is now down to 13, which shows the impact of this brilliant charity funding research into baby loss. But 13 babies dying per day is still far too many.
That’s 13 families who have to face the heartbreak of their baby’s death. 13 sets of parents, grandparents, siblings, extended families and their friends who are grieving. Every. Single. Day.
So I’ve pledged to help raise money through #challenge13 by stepping away from Facebook for 13 weeks. It means giving up using a platform that I use to help promote my business, so that’s not easy, but it also means stepping away from a social media platform that I find quite toxic and bad for my mental health. I’m looking forward to experiencing some benefits too from giving it up.
So I’m asking you please to give generously in Alice’s memory and to help those grieving families.
Thank you for your support.
