Autumn Appeals · 7 October 2014

Since 1986, the Soup Kitchen has been a vital resource for the homeless, elderly & vulnerable in Central London. We provide food, clothing, mental health support and a sense of community to nearly 200 people daily. We aim to provide a nutritious meal in a safe environment that welcomes everyone.

Story

Please meet John and Danny, the FACES of our Winter Appeal

John (shown on the left above)

John has been sleeping rough for 20 years on and off, and does not want to move into accommodation, though we regularly encourage him to settle down.  By eating at the SK he maintains his health and has immediate access to warm clothing and any further help he needs.  He also enjoys the company.

Danny

Danny lives in social housing and is unemployed.  He usually visits us about 3 times a week, but just before his next benefits payment is due he comes in every day as there is no other way he can afford to eat.

We help both homeless and marginally homeless – about 60 Johns and Dannys a day.

Please, can you help us to help them?

Winter Appeal

Any amount is welcome but these are our priorities for the year:

·        New ovens and other equipment:  the new ovens replace a model that was more than 15 years old and no longer viable to repair.  This impressive piece of kit will help provide better food for both the SK and the C4W Homeless Shelter that uses the SK at night during the coldest winter months.  It is a vital investment for the next 15 years!

Cost: £10,000

·        A new double-glazed door for the Cabin will keep the cabin warmer, allow in more light and be much easier to open and close.

Cost: £5,000

·        A Directory of other homeless projects, tailored to SK guests: drawn up by a homeless consultant, it helps us refer our guests to projects that really suit their needs and are also within easy reach of the SK.  Its customised maps show locations and which buses to take.

Cost: £2,000

·        The costs for our Clothes Closet, which is busiest at this time of year.

Cost: £1,000

·        General running expenses

Cost: £7,000

Target:  £25,000, with all gifts of £500 or more to be recognised on a Cabin plaque
