Story

Landmines, whilst effective weapons of war, are horrific in that they maim and kill years after the conflict has ceased. In Cambodia there are still on average 2 fatalities per day from landmines, mainly young children often playing in fields who do not understand the significance of the "danger - landmines" signs.

As many of you know, I had the opportunity to visit Cambodia last year and see for myself the great work Cambodia Trust is doing out there. I am particularly impressed by their teaching programme which trains medics from other countries who can go back and help victims from landmines in such countries (eg Sri Lanka where landmines have been displaced as a result of the recent tsunami).

Victims of landmines loose limbs and often, in poor counties, they are outcast by society and left to beg. Artifical limbs can make such a huge difference to such people.

My challenge is to ride approximately 260 kms across Mongolia on horseback. The event commences 29 June 2005. I shall be camping - very basic (for those of you who know me, this will be the hardest part of the challenge- how am I to cope without the fluffy towels and molton browns?!) I do not know any of the other people who may be on the ride so I shall definitely be outside my comfort zone, but I am determined to do it.

So, please dig deep and sponsor me online. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Cambodia Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Please sponsor me now! Many thanks for your support. Miranda.
