Fundraiser in honor of BRC's 50th Anniversary and the BRC Champions Benefit, hosted by the BRC Leadership Council

Story

Dear friends,

As many of you know, I have served for a number of years as co-chair of the leadership council for the Bowery Residents' Committee, more commonly known as BRC. Founded in 1971, BRC is the leading nonprofit, providing housing, treatment and job training services to New York City's homeless population.

The organization's work begins in the streets and subways where its outreach workers can often be seen interacting with people, sometimes with the same people night after night, until they convince them to come into a shelter.

From there, BRC provides a full continuum of care, including transitional housing and shelters, permanent low-income housing, substance-abuse treatment, mental health services, workforce development and services for older adults.

The organization also has rigorous performance-measurement standards, and its programs are actually effective—one reason I was initially drawn to it. I also support BRC because homelessness is one of the most visible signs of need in our community, and I believe we have a responsibility as a society to find effective ways to solve it. Putting a dollar in someone's cup isn't the answer.

Today, I'm asking you to join Trevor and me in making a gift to BRC in honor of the leadership council's annual Champion's Benefit. This year, I'll be out of town on the day the event is being held. I want to make it up to BRC by raising more money than ever to support its programs.

It would mean so much to me if you made even a small contribution.

All my best,

Miriam
