Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Burundi in East Africa is one of the world’s poorest and hungriest countries. Simon Guillebaud, a missionary who lives in Burundi and founder of the charity Great Lakes Outreach, visited and preached at All Saints Church, Marlow in July 2016 and shared his passion for helping this impoverished country.
Some facts about Burundi:
• Population of 10.4 million
• 67% live in poverty.
• The country suffered terrible genocides rooted in tribal tensions. 300,000 died in ethnic conflict between 1993 and 2005 – like Rwanda but a lot less publicised.
• Less than 2% of population have electricity in their home
• Only 1 in 2 children go to school
• One in 5 adults has AIDs
• There is just one doctor per 34,744 people
Our team is made up of Harriet Miles, Ruth Frost, Sara Edwardes and Paul Edwardes, and we all committed to spending a week during Easter 2019 to volunteer with Great Lakes Outreach.
During our time there we got involved with projects including
• visiting 2 Pygmy communities and helping to build a Pygmy house
• visiting schools and orphanages in different parts of the country run by charities partnering with GLO
• attending and taking part in a local church service
• visiting the offices and learning more about the charity J-LIfe who hosted us for most of the weekend
.....and much, much more.
We have now returned with many stories to tell and a passion to continue fundraising to help the many impoverished people we met, especially in the Pygmy communities. There is hope but there's also so much to do to get this country truly back on its feet again.
Please continue to support us in this venture and help make a difference to some of the poorest people in the world!
