Milton Keynes canoe club 3 lake challenge · 29 April 2016

We support the growing number of people in and around Milton Keynes affected by a life-limiting illness. We give our patients and their loved ones specialist, personalised care - free of charge. Only 13.8% of our costs are met by ongoing NHS funding, so we’re dependent on your support. Thank you.

Story

                       MKCC 3 lake challenge

Towards the end of 2015, our head of ambitious and tough challenges, Jez Young, thought it might be a good idea to send out a request for a show of interest in undertaking the challenge of paddling 3 lakes in 3 countries in 24 hours! Six paddlers have decided to push themselves to the limit to face this challenge, in order to raise money for this worthwhile charity, previously supported by MKCC in 2011.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our support team, who will be driving hundreds of miles and keeping us going with motivational words and most importantly, food at the end of each lake.

So the challenge in some more detail:-

On Friday 29th April we will be travelling up to Carlisle to stay the night ready to continue our journey up to Loch Awe in Scotland where we will start the stopwatch and our challenge at 16:00 on Saturday. We will paddle the first lake, a distance of 25 miles (the longest fresh water loch in Scotland!) aiming to finish around 22:00. When we have had our hot food and packed the boats and kit away our drivers will drive us down to Lake Windermere in Cumbria for us to start the 2nd lake at 03:00. This is not as long as before but still a good 12 miles. Once we've paddle Windermere we'll be off to Lake Bala in Wales to start at midday on Sunday and will be paddling 7 miles here. This is the shortest of the three but it may well be the hardest as a final push will be needed to complete this tough challenge!!

Richard Medley is going to be one of our drivers/support team. He has experienced the amazing work that Willen Hospice do. Here are some of his words:-

"Willens staff provide an invaluable service for those needing care and also for their families. Their compassion and support are amazing and were of great comfort when my grandfather stayed. Willen needs support to keep this service available for the future."
