MND AWARENESS

Mnd Awareness Facebook page was launched in Memory of my Father Tony Wheaton whom sadly passed away after a short 7 month battle from PBP MND in July 2011.  My Father Tony never lost his smile or giggles, he showed true strength & inspiration against this terrible heartbreaking disease with his Thumbs up saying everything was ok!

Tony was working as a builder upto diagnosis of MND, and was convinced he was going to live five years, we had never heard of MND, we honestly thought there would be some treatment or cure that would make Dad better, but sadly there was nothing we could do, give him or help to stop the fast progression of the worst PBP MND that Dad had been diagnosed with, Dads speech started to slur first, friends would ask if Dad had been drinking as he was unable to make sense, his whole body was twitching and he was becoming very weak walking , he was unable to use a mobile phone to text, the times I showed him but he could not grasp it so the easiest option in the beginning was a wipe board and pen, my son would have noughts and crosses games on his wipeboard, and Grandad always won with a giggle, July 2011 Dad was now unable to speak, walk very far, dress, or eat and was frail,his breathing was difficult at times and there were lots more issues he was trying to deal with, he went into hospital to have his Peg fitted to be able to give him liquid food as he was thin loosing weight and only able to eat liquid made foods, somehow he knew he was not coming home, he would hold his Thumbs up to other patients in the ward to see if they ok, worried about others than himself,  it was touch and go several times with his lungs when sadly 21st July 2011 our gorgeous Dad passed away, he was right he wasnt coming back home!  his last journey home on his funeral day was the day I decided to start MND Awareness to help other families in the same situation, watching a loved one deteriorate when there is nothing you can do to make it better, we could only spend quality time with him, make those moments special and cry behind closed doors knowing that Dad would not see his next Christmas.

Since Dad became a MND Angel, MND Awareness has been running on Facebook with over 19,000 amazing supporters, myself and my son have been to several MND Fun days raising money for our local branch Exeter & East Devon selling bric a brac, when my son turned 16, after being unwell himself for a few years decided he wanted to jump out of a plane for MND in memory of his Grandad and in doing so raised over £1500 added to the funds we have already made from Stall events, selling keyrings, awareness bands and car stickers , The Tony Wheaton Tribute Fund 299836 now stands over £11,777 + GiftAid, we are so happy that the monies raised go to MNDA to help other loved ones diagnosed and towards research to help find some treatment or a cure. MND Awareness Just Giving page has been set up to help raise more funds for loved ones living with Motor Neurone Disease, and for each MND Awareness item sold that is donated in Dad, Tony Wheaton's Memory, I am sure Dad would be thrilled that from all the sadness this disease brought to our family, something good will come out of it in the future, hopefully a cure to end this heartbreaking disease for every family that has been effected by MND.
