Story

Help Team Moe and Matt raise a mountain of cash to tackle malaria

This February, myself Mohammed Bin Abdullah Al Thani, the chairman of musafir.com and Masoud Mohammed will join a team of explorers led by Arab mountain-climbing pioneer, Zed Al Refai, in a mission to scale Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro , which rises to a majestic 5,895 metres.

Scaling any summit over 4,000 metres is an arduous physical and psychological challenge, even if your expedition is led by someone as experienced as Zed, who holds the title of being the first Arab to summit Mount Everest and complete the Seven Summits challenge. As the world’s highest free-standing peak, Mount Kilimanjaro is particularly unique in this respect because it rises over 4,600m above the plains of Tanzania.

From sleepless nights to gale-force winds, we’ll need to fight our way through stifling jungle cover, contend with some of the largest snakes on the planet and survive temperatures of minus fifteen degrees Celsius; all while battling altitude sickness, dehydration and aching muscles in the thin cold air. It’s been said that even tying a shoelace on Kilimanjaro’s upper reaches can wear the fittest person out.

However, despite the adversity, we are determined to summit Africa’s highest peak, because we’re determined to raise a mountain of cash to beat Africa’s biggest killer - malaria. That’s right, almost 3.3 billion people or more than half of the world's population, are at risk of dying from malaria. In Tanzania alone, home to Mount Kilimanjaro, malaria is the leading cause of child deaths, with one child lost to the disease every 30 seconds. That’s over a million lives every single year.

In fact, in the time it’s taken you to reach this line, a child in Africa will have died of malaria.

So please donate generously and support our cause as we scale Mount Kilimanjaro to raise a mountain of cash to beat malaria. Every penny counts and even the smallest donation can go a long way to help save lives. All donations will go directly to the Malaria Consortium, a charity dedicated to curtailing the spread malaria and easing the devastation caused by this killer disease.

You may donate from anywhere in the world using your credit or debit card. Simply work out how much you would like to donate in pounds sterling (£GBP) using this currency conversion website (http://www.xe.com/ucc) and JustGiving will charge you the equivalent amount in your local currency.

For example, just £5 will pay for a net to protect two lives. On the other hand, £100 will pay for effective life-saving malaria treatment for 200 children.

Thank you for visiting our page and please donate generously.

We’ll see you from the Roof of Africa!

On a less somber note, Matt will attempt the highest chicken dance in the world at the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. You saw him ‘Sheikhing his thing’ back at sea level, now witness him go all out at the Roof of Africa. Keep in mind that our Facebook group has to reach over 2,000 members for him to perform it.
