We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

Heya,

In case you don’t know me I’m Molly and by the time the three of us will be starting our crazy but very exciting challenge I will have just finished my Linguistics MA degree at the University of Edinburgh! So I guess my graduation will be walking out of Scotland with these two!

What are the crazy three of us doing?

Archie, Kasun and I have decided to raise money for two amazing charities very close to our hearts, Cancer Research UK and Mind. To do this, we have set ourselves a big challenge to not only climb the Three Peaks of the UK, (starting with Ben Nevis in Scotland, then Scafell Pike in England and lastly Snowdon in Wales), but to also navigate the (approximately) 403miles / 650km between them on foot! We are starting our trek on 24th May and we plan to complete the whole challenge in only 16 days on 8th June!! This also means that we will be walking a marathon (at the very least) every single day and hopefully I will get a World Record for the fastest time for a female to do this challenge on foot!

Why are these charities important to me?

The reason that Cancer Research UK is my chosen charity is because my Grandfather very sadly passed away from cancer last summer. He had defeated cancer once before and he was having to try and fight it very bravely again. I was very lucky to be at home due to the pandemic and so I became one of his carers whilst he was still at home. This was without a doubt one of the toughest jobs that I have ever had to do (and so it seems fitting that I am raising money for Cancer Research UK by doing one of the toughest challenges I have ever had to do). He still managed to make us laugh when he could but it was very clear to me how much pain this awful disease was causing. What made it worse is that I was in charge of administering all of his different medications, nearly every hour of the day, and even with so many of them, not only was the pain relief not enough, but I also knew that none of the medications were actually providing the cure he wanted and needed and there was nothing else that I could do to help. By supporting this charity I really hope that Cancer Research UK can find a way to change this, so that in future, carers, parents, children and grandchildren can give their relatives a way to fight it.

Our other chosen charity, Mind, is also very close to our hearts. Being aware of and supporting our own and our friend’s mental health could not be more important than it has been during these very tough and strange times when everyone feels secluded and all you actually need is people around you. (To support Mind please see Kasun’s page!)

We would all be VERY grateful if you could help to support us with our challenge by donating anything you can to our chosen charities and make it all the more worthwhile!
