On July the 6th 2016 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Receiving that news was terrifying, not knowing what the future held. I spent most of the second half of 2016 in hospital. At the end of July I had my first brain surgery, lasting 8 and a half hours. As I woke up I was told I would need another surgery, since the tumour was so large it couldn’t be removed in one go. Then in November I had the second operation. 10 hours after and I woke up, to be told I was paralysed on my left side. My arm and leg did not move at all. After a year of hard work and determination, I am walking again. That is why, exactly a year after that operation I will be walking 8 miles, from Torquay harbour to Brixham harbour.
If you know me you know I don’t do walking, never have, and I’ve been walking again for less than a year so this is going to be a gruelling task for me. Me, my mum and Jensen(my puppy) will be doing the walk. As many of you already know, Jensen was bought for me as a companion to help my recovery and to help me walk again.
I am also walking this in honour of my good friends, Holly Dunn and Jimmy Carter, who I met at Clic Sargents Teenage and Young Adults socials, who both sadly passed away to brain tumours this year. Without people doing things like this, no one would be able to beat this.
Over 16,000 people a year will be diagnosed with a brain tumour, and brain tumours do not discriminate. Any age, race or gender. I have met so many people this past year who have been touched by brain tumours in one way or another. We need to help find cures.
