Martyn and Mark go to the pub. Again . . . via Haverhill. A 45 mile walk in support of the Red Cross on May 3rd.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Cast your minds back to last year. Some of you might remember that, on a dull and overcast day in May, a couple of hardworking Red Cross types took some time off from helping people in a crisis and decided to go to the pub. One of them, we’ll call him Mark Bradley in order to protect his identity, had left his fags at the Ferryboat Inn, Felixstowe. Both he and Martyn Peck (me), his erstwhile Red Cross colleague, had to pick them up en route. Only, they had no transport, and had to walk. 35 miles. Those of you who made it to the pub that evening might recall that, by the time our hapless pair arrived, they were feeling slightly ill and not as sociable as they might have liked.
So, in a shameless attempt to curry favour and make it up to as many of you as possible, they have decided to go to the pub again, on Tuesday May 3rd, and you are all invited. Thankfully, Mark has given up smoking, so they haven’t got to do anything stupid like pick up some forgotten cigarettes this time. However, they’ve arranged to have a cup of tea with Suffolk Volunteer Council Chair, Alex Keep, beforehand. In Haverhill. A 45 mile walk from the pub. And they still have no transport . . .
Because they felt so rough during, and after, the last trip to the pub, they have decided to take someone along with them this time who will be able to help should things go pear shaped. So, this year they will be joined by woefully naive Red Cross bod, Simon Holmes, who is involved with emergency stuff, or something, and who actually thinks we might be able to complete this walk. And, just in case they don’t make it to the pub in time for their dinner, they have kidnapped the chef, Darren, and taken him along, too.
Will our brave Red Cross boys make it this time? Or are they just a hazard to real walkers? If last year’s successful but painful attempt at 35 miles is anything to go by then the answer to those questions is no and yes, respectively. And you can find out, and potentially become part of the search party, by coming to the Nelson public house, Fore Street, Ipswich and waiting for them.
