Sands supports anyone affected by the death of a baby, works in partnership with health professionals to try to ensure that bereaved parents and families receive the best possible care and funds research that could help to reduce the numbers of babies dying and families devastated by this tragedy.

Story

Last year I ran my first marathon and raised £1000. I’m at it again, and would love to raise another £1000 for a great cause! Here’s why:

On February 6 2001, my son Ethan James Lawlor was born too early. He struggled and held on to life until I had to let him go three days later. As unimaginably horrible as it was, I have learned to live without him. But I still wish I'd been able to raise my boy.

Then on August 16 2016, my sister and brother-in-law experienced the tragedy I would not wish on my worst enemy: they lost their baby too. Jacob Ethan Palmer went to full term; a full, healthy pregnancy, then died in childbirth. He was a beautiful boy who I held in my arms and fell in love with instantly. Again, my heart is broken that I can't help raise my nephew.

I don't want anyone else to lose their baby. I believe that these kinds of deaths are far too common, and that raising awareness will encourage the necessary research to inform better medical practice to save these babies' lives. I want to raise money for a charity that supports people (like me and my brother and sister) when they lose a baby.
